Traditional Christmas BBQ?
December 3rd, 2010 by admin Join the discussion »
After sweating it out creating a full roast in a steamy kitchen last Christmas, this year it is going to be the simple Aussie seafood BBQ. In Australia the country of origin of the seafood must be displayed but this doesn’t provide much insight into how sustainable the seafood is. What is more confusing is that fish from over exploited and depleted fishstocks regularly grace the shelves of fishmongers. So what should be on and off the Australian BBQ list this Christmas?
Update on Solar Rebates

If, like us, you are in NSW and were thinking of installing photovoltaic panels on your roof to generate your own solar electricity, there have been a few changes. The NSW Solar Bonus Scheme, introduced in 2009, provides gross feed-in-tariffs of 60 cents a kilowatt/hour for the solar electricity generated. This feed-in-tariff helps pay off the cost of installation. This scheme has been reviewed and from the end of October 2010 you will receive 20 cents a kilowatt/hour for electricity sold back to the grid.

Environmentally friendly disposable nappies are edging onto supermarket shelves alongside the familiar sight of brands such as Huggies and Babylove. Unlike the dominant brands, which have large marketing budgets, Nature Babycare has built awareness by word of mouth and has some innovative marketing techniques. One such initiative is their Ambassador program which gives back to the consumer. So how is Nature Babycare different? Who wants to join our trial panel?

Biodegradable baby rattles were only some of the fabulous eco-friendly baby products that we came across at the Eco Baby Expo in Luna Park Sydney. It was great to see so many inspirational products under one roof. We chatted with many of the stall holders and had a great time testing, sniffing and sampling. Here’s a few of our favourites.
At Last More Choice For Eco Disposable Nappies

When in the supermarket there is a depressing lack of eco-friendly disposable nappies. At last this is about to change. Last week saw the launch of Little Takas 90 per cent biodegradable nappy range. Unlike conventional nappies Little Takas nappies are made of viscose and corn based fibre that will decompose within 6 months in an aerobic environment.
Eco Friendly Halloween

Halloween as a kid was very exciting. Dressing up in scary costumes, staying up late, making lanterns, and gorging on the haul of treats collected. Living in a neighbourhood full of kids its obligatory to get involved again. The shops are full of cheap plastic masks, costumes and accessories at this time of year. But there are great ways of creating a truly green halloween (and also staying on track with the Salvos ‘Buy Nothing New Month’).
Eco Footprint Beyond the Grave

Did you know that burials have a greater long term environmental impact than cremations? Neither did we! And theres more… Centennial Park in South Australia, is up for an environmental award for its efforts towards achieving sustainability. It is also the first cemetery in the Australia, and possibly the world, to manage their entire greenhouse gas emissions with a carbon offset scheme.
Ecorenovations Living Green Kitchens

With renovations at the forefront of my mind, one idea that has caught my eye is the concept of a green kitchen. We are not just talking eco-friendly materials here, we are talking a living breathing space. Immediately it is clear that there are some logistics that need to be thought through to grow plants inside. There are also different levels you can take this theme to, from a pot on the windowsill to a kitchen jungle. So how can we integrate a living green kitchen into our plans?
