My husband has just become a respectable spectacle wearer. And after spending the day looking at frames I was wondering whether there could be a more eco friendly way to do it. I’ve heard about recycling unwanted glasses by donating them to those in need. We have a collection box for old specs at work. But to find a company that uses recycled metal and plastic was a bit of an eye opener. Oh dear sorry about the pun…..
People Power a New Twist

Here’s a really interesting twist on people power. UK-based Pavegen Systems, have come up with a paving slab which can harvest the kinetic energy from pedestrian footsteps and convert it into electricity. The sustainable energy generated can be used for numerous activities including safety signs, lighting and even traffic lights.

A couple of years ago, a bright spark in San Francisco came up with a unique way to encourage companies to reduce their impact on the environment. He reasoned that they would only ever change if they could see a potential upside in their revenue. Rather than take the ‘stick’ approach and threaten action, he looked for a way to provide the ‘carrot’. Surry Hills in Sydney was the scene of the first Australian Carrotmob in October last year.

Eco Innovators – Chilli Promotions

The Melbourne based promotions company Chilli Promotions went carbon neutral on 1st July this year. In conjunction with the Carbon Reduction Institute the environmental impact of all elements of the daily operations of their business and the production, manufacturing and freight of each client order is offset.
Promotional materials include the ‘Ultimate Biodegradable Plastic Bag’ made from cornstarch which was launched last year. The driver behind the change was Managing Director Andy Galbally’s commitment for the company to remain at the forefront of socially and ecologically responsibe business practices.
